  • UK Targets proposed for Renewables contribution to electricity production:

5% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2003

10% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2010

  • Renewable energy expected to contribute to UK goal of 20% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2010, by saving 3.5 to 5.4 million tones of carbon per annum.
  • 3,500 people now work in the renewable energy industry in the UK: at least 10,000 new jobs expected to develop, many in rural areas, as renewable energy becomes a bigger domestic and export industry.
  • Key activities expected from members of the public include:

'Acceptance that deployment of these renewable energy technologies will require many small and locally sited stations with some unavoidable local environmental impact but with wider environmental benefits in reducing emissions, and contributing to the development of sustainable electricity supplies'.
