Energy for Education

The atmosphere is electric at Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen primary school since special photo voltaic solar panels were installed on the school roof during autumn half-term - organised by Awel Aman Tawe.

Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen primary school now exceeds government targets for the reduction of CO2 emissions by a huge margin! With 7 tonnes (the equivalent of 7 hot-air balloons) of CO2 saved, the school has reduced emissions by 16%, an improvement on the government's own targets of 10% by 2010.

The pupils can prove that reducing carbon emissions is possible with the aid of renewable energy. The school's electricity bills will also show massive savings thanks to 100% grant funding obtained by Awel Aman Tawe.

Photo voltaic panels (PV for short) convert light from the sun to electricity, even on cloudy days. School pupils will learn about renewable energy from close quarters, enabling them to monitor the PV?s electricity output on school computers, bringing renewable energy into the classroom.

Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen?s Headteacher, Mr. Jones says: 'The School feels very proud that we are one of the few schools in Wales that is so heavily committed to renewable energy. We also believe tht this is the way forward if we are to reduce air pollution and find alternative sources of energy.'

The grant for £60,000 is via the Energy Saving Trust's PV Demonstration fund and the National Assembly?s Local Regeneration Fund. The installation was carried out by renewable energy consultants Dulas.


The pupils of Ysgol Cymraeg Gwaun Cae Gurwen gave a warm welcome to the guests who included the Mayor and Mayoress, Mrs Gwenda Thomas AM,  local residents and community groups. The National Assembly's Minister Mrs. Edwina Hart was invited to switch on the PV panels. Mrs Hart praised the work carried out by the pupils and by the school staff who worked closely with Awel Aman Tawe to ensure the success of the project.   Other guests at the event included some of the key stakeholders in the renewable energy industry in Wales.
